When the words beauty pageant and beauty contestants are said, one thing that is not associated with either is diabetes. This has recently changed as the new Miss Idaho proudly flaunted her insulin pump during the swimsuit portion of her pageant competition. Sierra Sandison's bravery and advocacy has give type 1 diabetics new hope and encouragement to those that are self-conscious about their condition.
Sandison has been receiving large accolades from the diabetic community with her hashtag #ShowMeYourPump. At first she was worried about it but after finding out that Nicole Johnson, the Miss America of 1999 wore won during competition, she quickly embraced the idea of wearing a pump during competition.
As Sandison embraces her new crown, she also actively promotes her platform of Possibilities for Disabilities, hosting sports camps for people with developmental disabilities. Using her diabetes and a solid foundation for her platform, she explains that "...we all have obstacles, but we need to know that we can overcome them, as well as use them to empower ourselves and make an impact on those around us." As she proudly promotes her diabetes as the new Miss Idaho, we can find joy in knowing that coming together as a community to face our challenges is not just for medical conditions, but for greater social change as well. Congratulations Miss Sandison; may we be moved to act thanks to your bravery!
