I was reading an article on CNN that suggested increasing coffee consumption may help to decrease the risk of type 2 diabetes. The study concluded that people who increased their coffee intake by more than a cup a day lowered their risk of type 2 diabetes by 11% compared to people who held a steady consumption. This data is based on a study of more than 120,000 health professionals that have been followed long term for observations, over the span of four years. The type of coffee involved in this study was a simple eight-ounce cup of black coffee.
Other health benefits in coffee include the ability to control weight thanks to the plethora of antioxidants and naturally occurring compounds. It has also been showed that the cholorogenic acids in coffee help to regulate blood glucose by slowing glucose production in the body after a meal by modifying the activity of specific enzymes in the liver allowing for a more steady release of glucose into the body.
What does this mean? Drink up, enjoy a cup of coffee during the day when your tired or after a meal to help slow the release of glucose into the blood. Coffee is a a one of the beverages in the world that is most widely consumed as it provides a great assortment of benefits.
